17U Boys Burgarski Cup
The 16U boys entered their final 17U tournament of the season with high hopes after a silver medal finish in our previous 16U event. It would be a challenge with two of our middles missing for the entire tournament. This would create the opportunity to give our players lots of playing time and for some players the chance to play some of their secondary positions. Complicating the mix, was trying to implement some of the new systems we have been running in practice as we are in the “integration” phase of our season long training plan. Our goal is to peak at provincials so considering the above factors, we went into this tournament with an open mind.
Although we failed to win a game at this tournament, we passed well and realized that we have the skill to run systems. We are still learning our new systems and with the improvement in our passing, we are well on our way to improving the caliber of our play and introducing the boys to higher level skills and strategies that they will need in future years.
We have 3 more weeks to work on our systems in preparation for our next 16U tournament at the University of Waterloo. The boys are enjoying running X’s and tandems. It will be fun to see them execute these newly acquired plays in competition.
